Masking while black: Protect our health or get profiled?
It is an undeniable fact that Africans cannot sit in our cars with our spouses and children, buy candy, wear hoodies, sell loose cigarettes, meet friends at coffee shops, celebrate our weddings, mind our business in our homes (or anywhere for that matter) and a plethora of many other ‘offenses’ without being under the constant threat of being murdered by the State and its minions.
We can now add wearing a face mask in public to protect ourselves from the potentially lethal, highly infectious viral disease, also known as colonialvirus, to the never-ending list of conditions that may lead us to an untimely State-sanctioned death.
As if it weren’t enough that Africans are dying of COVID-19 at a disproportionately high rate, we are also disproportionately being targeted for congregating in public and for following the national mandate to wear protective face masks in public. The two African men in Illinois who were harassed and forced to leave a Walmart by an armed officer, is only one example.
Damon Young makes a good point in his article for The Washington Post which states, “Existing while black in America requires, among other things, a perpetual cognizance that your appearance will be both noticed and noted, possibly legislated against and perhaps even criminalized.”
What the above-mentioned quote is basically pointing out is that the colonialvirus is not a medical problem but is a political problem. As with every other condition that African people face wherever we are located, we catch hell because we do not have power over our lives. We do not have economic and political control over our stolen land, our resources and our ability to move freely through our communities and the world!
In other words, as Africans not only do we need control of the police in our communities, we need to seize power and to fight to be our own government!
This is why the African People’s Socialist Party has launched The People’s War Campaign against the COVID-19 pandemic to give political leadership to the masses led by the African working-class.
